The Righteous

If Israelis were so sure of the rightness of their cause, why the violent intolerance they display toward everyone who tries to make a different case?Gideon Levy

Overcoming Zionism’s author Joel Kovel has been informed that his contract to the Alger Hiss Chair of Social Studies at Bard College would not be renewed this July 1, 2009. Professor Kovel has issued a statement stating that such a course of action from Bard is due to his political views with regard to Israel.

Lately, we learnt that Michael Scheuer was “terminated as a senior fellow by the [Jamestown] Foundation” also for voicing criticism of Israel. Before that, it was Norman Finkelstein. Those are the high-profile cases. How many more are there that we will never hear about?

Perhaps then this is as good a time as any to bring forth this publication from AMEU entitled The Righteous:

The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous has as its purpose the preservation of stories of non-Jews who rescued Jews during the Holocaust. Perhaps one day there will exist a foundation to record the stories of Jews whose sense of outrage led them to protest the treatment of Palestinians. Here are individuals we think would qualify: Jews who, confronted with Israel’s recent military action in Gaza, rose up to say, for all to hear: Not in Our Name. Not Ever. — John F. Mahoney, Executive Director
